March 22 is World Water Day

World Water Day is an international day of observance that originated at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The official theme for World Water Day this year is "Clean Water for a Healthy World" and the  focus is on raising awareness of water quality issues in a world where some 1.1 billion people lack safe drinking water.

How can you help?

Water quality issues are extremely complicated, but World Water Day is also an ideal time to start using water more wisely at home. Almost everyone can do that much without resorting to internet loans.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, dripping faucets, running toilets, and other household leaks waste one trillion gallons of water each year in the United States. For the average family, that's 10,000 gallons of water a year, enough to fill a backyard swimming pool.

Find and fix household leaks

The EPA offers helpful online advice for finding and fixing household leaks. Easily correctible leaks include leaking toilet flappers, dripping faucets, and other leaking valves.
