They are two pieces of metal that are hit against each other to produce a sound that can be added to music. They are actually pretty heavy and difficult to maneuver. They can't be hit directly together. If they are then they will suction cup to each other and could break the arms of the person playing them. I played them once in a marching band. Those things give people some seriously strong arm muscles. I was so sore after every day of practice. There was so much that was just for looks and not for sound. I am really glad I had the opportunity to learn about cymbals.
